Harley Bailey the black mermaid was a global reaction to racism It breaks my heart
Harley Bailey, the main character of “The Little Mermaid,” has expressed his thoughts on the criticism surrounding him.
According to the British Daily Mail and other foreign media on the 22nd (Korea Standard Time), singer and actor Harley Bailey (22) said in an interview with The Edition, “The new Little Mermaid has escaped a lot of gender discrimination that plagued the original.”
There is still controversy over the casting of Harley Bailey, a black man who is different from the original version of “The Little Mermaid.” There is an original version of The Little Mermaid, but I don’t think I should have chosen a black woman. Moreover, a white man was cast as the prince, adding to the controversy
In response, Harley Bailey said, “It was a shock to see the reaction from around the world (to my casting). The reactions of all children, especially young girls of color, really made me emotional,” he said.
And Harley Bailey said, “As women, we are amazing, independent, modern. Everything is more than that. I’m truly happy that Disney made a movie with this theme. I feel honored and grateful to be here,” he added.
Harley Bailey also mentioned the casting process. She said, “I think I learned a lot from the Little Mermaid. I auditioned at 18 and got a role at 19. He turned 23 this year. “I think Ariel really helped me grow up,” he said.
Meanwhile, “The Little Mermaid,” based on the animation of the same name in 1989, raised expectations with the combination of talented actors such as Melissa McCarthy, Jonah Hauer King, Javier Bardem and Aquafina, as well as Harley Bailey as “Ariel.” On top of that, veteran musical producers, including legendary composer Alan Menken, who was in charge of the original animation of “The Little Mermaid,” the music of “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin,” were all in attendance.
“The Little Mermaid” is scheduled to meet with the audience in May
